CHAPTER -5
FRONT
OF ARM
Muscles:
Biceps brachii:
Origin:
Two heads:
Long head from supraglenoid tubercle of scapula
Short head from the tip of coracoid process
Insertion:
Biceps tendon is inserted into the radial tuberosity and the
aponeurosis is inserted in to the posterior border of ulna
Nerve supply:
Musculocutaneous
nerve
Actions:
Flexion of elbow joint
Supination of forearm
Coracobrachialis:
Origin:
From the tip of the coracoid process along with the short head of biceps brachii
Insertion:
Inserted in to the middle of the shaft of humerus
Nerve supply:
Musculocutaneous nerve
Actions:
Flexion of shoulder joint
Brachialis:
Origin:
FF From the anterior surface of the shaft of humerus
Insertion:
Inserted in to the tuberosity of the ulna
Nerve supply:
Dual nerve supply: Musculocutaneous nerve and radial nerve
Actions:
Flexion of elbow joint

BRACHIAL ARTERY:
Origin : it is the continuation of axillary
artery
Extent : from the lower border of teres
major to the neck of radius
Course :
- The artery is at first medial to the humerus and then to the front of the bone
- It appears in the cubital fossa as its content
Behind : (from above downwards)
Long head of triceps
Medial head of triceps
Brachialis
In front :
Median nerve crosses the artery in the middle arm
In the cubital fossa, crossed by bicipital aponeurosis
Laterally:
Median nerve in upper part
Biceps brachii tendon in lower part
Medially:
Medial cutaneous nerve of forearm and ulnar nerve in upper
part
Median nerve in lower part
Branches of brachial artery:
Profunda brachii artery :
Large branch of brachial artery
and it follows the radial nerve in the spiral groove.
Superior ulnar collateral artery
Inferior ulnar collateral artery
Nutrient artery to humerus
Applied anatomy :
Pulsation of brachial artery is auscultated in front of elbow
which is the standard method to record blood pressure.
FOR DISSECTION OF FRONT OF ARM, WATCH THIS VIDEO:
MUSCULOCUTANEOUS NERVE:
- Nerve of the anterior compartment of the arm
- Branch of lateral cord of brachial plexus
- Root value is C5,C6,C7
- It pierces the coracobrachialis and supplies the muscles
- It descends between the biceps brachii and the coracobrachialis and gives branches to the two muscles
- Then, below the level of elbow joint, it continues as the lateral cutaneous nerve of forearm- so only called as musculocutaneous nerve
