CHAPTER -4

SCAPULAR AND DELTOID REGIONS

This part has following muscles

Deltoid muscle

Supra spinatus

Infra spinatus

Teres minor

Teres major

DELTOID:

Called so as it resembles the inverted delta shape,

Origin: (Opposite to the insertion of trapezius)

From anterior border and upper surface of lateral one third of clavicle.

From the lower lip of the crest of the spine of scapula

From the lateral border of acromion

Insertion : Deltoid tuberosity of humerus

Nerve supply : Axillary nerve : (C5, C6)

Actions

Middle fibres  - powerful abductor of shoulder joint

Anterior fibres – act with pectoralis major

Posterior fibres – extension, adduction and lateral rotation of shoulder joint

CAN YOU IDENTIFY THE LABELLED MUSCLES?

SUPRASPINATUS:

Origin: from supra spinous fossa of scapula and the overlying deep fascia.

Insertion: Passes beneath the coracoacromial arch to insert into the upper part of greater tubercle of humerus.

Nerve supply: Supra scapular nerve ( C5,C6)

Actions : Initial abduction of the shoulder joint up to 150

(Note : this initial abduction is needed in many activities of upper limb as in writing and drawing).
